We are currently partnering with a high-growth technology business to appoint an experienced Engineering Manager to join an expanding engineering function. This is a key leadership opportunity for someone who enjoys operating in a fast-moving environment and wants to play a central role in shaping both technical direction and team culture.

Our client is seeking a hands-on engineering leader who can support delivery, coach engineers, and contribute to architectural thinking and longer-term strategy. This role would suit someone who is passionate about building scalable platforms, leading strong teams, and delivering meaningful product outcomes across complex financial systems.

The Opportunity

As Engineering Manager, you will lead a team of engineers working on business-critical platform initiatives within a regulated product environment. You will work closely with product and cross-functional stakeholders to drive delivery, support team growth, and help establish strong engineering practices.

Key Responsibilities

People Leadership
Lead, mentor, and develop a team of software engineers, creating a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous development.

Technical Direction
Support architectural decisions and technical planning, ensuring systems are scalable, resilient, and aligned to wider business and product objectives.

Delivery Management
Partner with product managers and other stakeholders to deliver high-quality features and enhancements in a timely and effective way.

Team Growth
Contribute to hiring, onboarding, and team development, helping to build a high-performing and well-balanced engineering function.

Engineering Standards
Promote strong software engineering practices across reliability, observability, incident management, code quality, and long-term maintainability.

Continuous Improvement
Encourage regular reflection and process improvement to help the team evolve in line with business needs and customer expectations.

About You

We are looking for candidates who can demonstrate the following:

Leadership Experience
Significant experience in software engineering, including several years in technical leadership or engineering management roles. Individuals with a strong senior engineering background and relevant domain expertise will also be considered.

Sector Knowledge
Previous experience within payments, card-based products, fintech, or other highly regulated transaction environments would be highly beneficial.

Technical Background
Strong understanding of backend engineering, API-led services, distributed systems, and cloud-based architecture. Experience with modern JavaScript/TypeScript environments and serverless applications would be advantageous.

Data & Persistence
Good knowledge of relational database design and data-driven applications, ideally across cloud-hosted SQL environments and modern ORM tools.

Commercial Mindset
Comfortable working in scaling or fast-evolving businesses, with the ability to make pragmatic decisions and balance pace with engineering quality.

Leadership Style
A collaborative and motivated leader who brings ownership, sound judgement, and a people-first approach to building successful teams.

Likely Technology Environment

While the exact stack may vary, the environment is expected to include a mix of the following:

  • Cloud infrastructure, primarily AWS
  • Backend development using TypeScript and Node.js
  • Frameworks such as NestJS
  • Serverless and event-driven architecture
  • SQL-based databases such as MySQL and PostgreSQL
  • ORM technologies including tools such as Prisma or similar
