Ethereum Foundation Supports Alexey Pertsev’s Legal Battle
The Ethereum Foundation has announced a significant donation of $1.25 million to support the legal defense of Alexey Pertsev, a key developer behind the Tornado Cash application. This move underscores the foundation’s stance that “writing code is not a crime,” a sentiment they shared in a recent post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.
The Tornado Cash Controversy and Legal Repercussions
Tornado Cash, a cryptocurrency mixing service, was sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury Department in 2022 due to allegations that it facilitated money laundering activities. As a result, the application enabled users to obscure the origins of their cryptocurrency, primarily Ethereum (ETH), which is the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization. This feature, while designed for privacy, however, reportedly became a tool for North Korean-sponsored actors to launder proceeds from cybercrimes.
Alexey Pertsev, who resides in the Netherlands, was arrested by Dutch authorities in 2022 and subsequently faced charges of money laundering. Moreover, a Dutch court in s-Hertogenbosch later convicted Pertsev, attributing $1.2 billion in laundered illicit assets to the use of Tornado Cash, resulting in a 64-month prison sentence. Currently, Pertsev is under house arrest pending his appeal.
